Advantages of medical chillers

Medical chillers help ensure your medical equipment reaches its fullest potential. They have industry-specific features that you can count on to maximize performance and uptime. Here are just a few of the advantages of choosing an industrial medical chiller to cool your components:

Temperature accuracy

Drake Refrigeration Medical Chiller

Precision medical equipment requires accurate temperature control. Our recirculation system maintains a temperature at +/- 1°F. Capacity modulation options allow us to achieve this level of precision without high degrees of compressor cycling, which can shorten component life. Consistent temperature accuracy equals more uptime for your medical equipment.

We provide the following low-temp design options to help maintain temperature accuracy:

  • Evaporators and heat exchangers sized for specific fluid for each application

  • Compressor cooling - Liquid injection and compressor fans

  • Oil management for compressor protection

  • Electronic expansion valves (EEVs) for tight superheat control

  • 1” insulation for heat gain resistance

  • Designs for fluid temperature pull down from higher temperatures

  • Pump selection specific to fluid type

Reliability

We design and fabricate our medical chillers with rugged standards using industry-leading components. You can rest comfortably knowing that our medical chillers will maintain a high uptime because of our redundant circuits and other backup systems. We design our medical chillers to operate from 120°F to -40°F ambient without any need for you to interact with the equipment. After the initial set up, the chiller will do the rest! When you are saving lives, your medical chiller is the last thing you want to worry about.

Energy-efficiency

We take environmental responsibility seriously and use only EPA-approved refrigerants and the latest in energy-efficient compressors. Additionally, our city water bypass apparatus operates without draining glycol. We also offer supplemental fluid coolers with our medical chiller systems for reduced energy consumption. We’ll help save our environment while you save our lives.

Our energy-efficient options include:

  • EC condenser fan motors for energy savings and more stable refrigerant temperatures

  • Floating Head Pressure for extremely efficient chillers in anything below 95°F ambient

  • Heat reclaim options for hot water loop

  • VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) on pumps for minimal required energy consumption

Types of Drake medical chillers

Our custom-capable product line includes an industrial-grade lineup of in-stock items available for quick shipment. You can also choose to partially or fully customize our products to meet your specifications.

We carry the following types of medical chillers:

Scroll medical chiller

Scroll medical chillers

Available with an air or water-cooled compressor, our scroll chillers are well-suited for lower fluid temperature requirements. These chillers come with compressors ranging from 2-60 HP, are easy to install and maintain, and can be tailored to meet your energy, mechanical, and other specifications. They are excellent for sporadic process applications that run less than 24 hours per day and can handle longer run times in certain environments.

  • Air- or water-cooled

  • 2-60 HP compressor power

  • Meets lower fluid temperature requirements

Semi-hermetic medical chillers

These air- or water-cooled medical chillers are ideal for larger industrial cooling and refrigeration applications. Available in 10-100 HP compressor power, our semi-hermetic chillers come with many customization options to meet your project needs.

  • Air- or water-cooled

  • 10-100 HP compressor power

  • Large industrial cooling and refrigeration needs

Screw medical chiller

Screw medical chillers

Ideal for large load requirements, screw chillers offer the consistency you need to maximize your medical equipment performance. Available between 40-214 HP compressor power, these chillers are powerful enough to keep your components running 24/7.

  • 40-214 HP compressor power

  • Meets larger cooling requirements

  • 24/7 operation

Remote condenser systems

With the condenser and compressor located in a separate unit, remote condenser systems help reduce noise and heat output, making them ideal for rooms with low ceilings, poor ventilation, and heat issues. Our remote condenser systems come with the same maximum uptime assurance that you expect from all Drake medical chillers.

Tank & pump packages

Our tank and pump packages are available between 30-30,000 gallons. You may also choose between polyethylene or stainless-steel tanks, depending on your needs. Our medical chiller experts can help you determine the best tank and pump package for you.

City Water Changeover Panels

The Auto City Water Changeover is a panel that allows the chiller to automatically switch from the chiller providing fluid to the process to city water providing cooling to the process. The city water changeover panel contains four water solenoids, two N.C. for normal chiller operation and two N.O. for city water operation. The switch over would take place in the in the event of alarms from the chiller to ensure cooling is always provided.

5 Mistakes to Avoid When Purchasing Medical Chillers

Before investing in a medical chiller for your equipment, it’s essential to consider several often-overlooked factors to avoid making a wrong turn. Whether you’re an expert or a novice in the world of refrigeration, steer clear of these mistakes when purchasing a medical cooler:

Drake Refrigeration Medical Chillers being assembled

1. Buying based solely on nominal capacity or tonnage

If you only look at the medical chiller’s nominal capacity or tonnage, you might miss other important factors that will keep your equipment running smoothly. Considerations such as flow rate, heat load variation, capacity output, redundancy, climate, and others must also play a role in the decision-making process. Learn more about the questions we help you consider when purchasing a medical chiller on our blog.

2. Buying a standard comfort chiller instead of a medical chiller

Standard comfort chillers are not intended to cool medical equipment. Rather, they are designed for use primarily during warmer months, which makes them susceptible to refrigeration issues when the weather turns cold. An industrial-grade medical chiller is the only way to ensure that you’re getting the best performance and most uptime from your equipment.

3. Not sizing the pump for the pressure drop through the process

With nearly every type of medical equipment, there are inevitable pressure drops that a medical chiller pump must accommodate. Medical components require a specialty high-pressure pump that is sized for the variation in flow rates, which helps ensure fluids move through the system effectively.

4. Not having a tank volume to handle the variation in load

With medical equipment heat load variations that can sharply fluctuate from 100% to 10%, depending on the stage in the processing cycle, a medical chiller must have enough tank volume to produce long run times without the compressor turning on and off mid-process.

5. Overpaying for unnecessary features

With some medical chiller manufacturers, you may be forced to choose a more expensive model just for one or two of its features. With us, we allow you to customize any of our in-stock chillers so that you pay for only what you need.
